4 Fun Facts about Solar Energy

As green-minded as California natives are, it’s no surprise to learn that the Golden State is paving the way for solar energy. Being the state with the most solar power installations, it’s easy to picture a whole new way of living, not just for California but for the world. Here are some surprisingly fun facts about solar energy and how it not only changes our way of living, but it also helps the planet flourish.

1. Solar Energy is the Most Abundant Energy Source

Because the sun provides free energy to use, it’s much cheaper than fossil fuels. And, unlike our dwindling sources of fossil fuels, solar energy is completely renewable. There’s actually enough solar energy being produced every hour to meet all of the Earth’s electrical needs for an entire year.

2. Solar Panels are 99% Cheaper Compared to 1977

In 1977, the cost for a simple solar cell was $77 a watt. Today that same cell only costs about $0.21. And an entire module is about $0.39 a watt.

3. China is a World Leader in Solar Usage

While California is no doubt the state with the most solar usage, China has installed double the solar-powered systems of the U.S. with an estimated 50 GW for the year 2017. For perspective, 50GW of solar could power over 8 million households.

4. Airplanes Could Fly Around the World on Solar Energy

Swiss pilot Bertrand Piccard successfully piloted an airplane known as Solar Impulse II from Abu Dhabi around the world. He departed on his journey in early 2016 and returned in July, opening numerous doors for solar energy’s future potential.
